Small Business Coverage and Peace of Mind
Tennessee has long played a role in the development of the American character. Founded in the eighteenth century by frontier trailblazers like Daniel Boone, Tennessee also helped give birth to unique American music styles including country, blues, and rock and roll. Memphis gave the world Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Sun Records, while Nashville is synonymous with the Grand Ole Opry and country greats like Alan Jackson, Faith Hill, and Waylon Jennings. But Tennessee is more than music. It also provides a home for major corporations, such as FedEx, AutoZone, Regal Entertainment, Volkswagen, and Nissan. From the Blue Ridge Mountains in East Tennessee to the banks of the Mississippi River in the west, the Volunteer State is also home to more than 105,000 independently owned and operated small businesses.
What are the Tennessee Workers’ Compensation Requirements?
All Tennessee employers, from Johnson City to Chattanooga, Clarksville, and Memphis are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. The workers’ compensation system protects both employers and employees with a no-fault guarantee of benefits for workers injured on the job. In exchange for providing medical treatment and income replacement to injured workers, employers are protected from costly lawsuits.
How Does Workers’ Compensation Work in Tennessee?
In 2013, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed the Workers’ Compensation Reform Act meant to update and streamline the original 1919 law. The bill’s main intent is to remove jurisdiction over injured workers’ claims from state courts and direct them into a newly created Court of Workers’ Compensation Claims within the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development. According to the governor, the workers’ compensation reforms “create a system that is fair, efficient, and provides better outcomes for both employees and employers. Employees will receive benefits faster and in a manner that is easier to calculate, and they will be able to return to work sooner. Employers will have a fairer, more predictable environment in which to conduct business and create jobs.”1
